About

Coil & Cord is a queer-owned multidisciplinary art and creative space located in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY, an area dense with artist studios and creative communities. Coil & Cord hosts workshops on a variety of creative and craft practices, including figure drawing, fiber arts, rope bondage/shibari/kinbaku, and other creative skill-building, as well as rotating art exhibitions, artist talks, performances, and community events.

At approximately 420 square feet of usable interior space, the venue is designed for full floor-to-ceiling utilization: a dense hard point grid near the ceiling and three vertical posts support suspension and aerial arts. The adjustable lighting grid supports a range of lighting options for art exhibitions, performances, and other events. A professional sound system and projector are also available.

Directions & Getting to the Studio

Coil & Cord is located at 200 6th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215 in Gowanus.

By Subway

We’re close to two nearby subway stations:

  • Smith–9 Sts (F, G) — about a 10 minute walk. Head east on 9th Street, then south on 6th Street.
  • 4 Av–9 St (F, G, R) — about an 8 minute walk. Head west on 9th Street to 6th Street. The D and N trains also stop here when running locally.

If you’re coming from Manhattan, the F train on 6th Avenue is your most direct option.

By Bus

Several bus routes stop within easy reach of the studio:

  • B61 — Runs along 9th Street, a short (4 min) walk from the studio; connects Park Slope, and Downtown Brooklyn via Red Hook.
  • B103 — Runs along 3rd Avenue, just steps from the studio; connects Downtown Brooklyn, Kensington, Flatbush, and Canarsie.
  • B37 — Also along 3rd Avenue, just steps from the studio; connects Sunset Park and Bay Ridge.
  • B57 — A longer walk (about 14 minutes), but worth knowing if you’re coming from South Williamsburg, Bushwick, or Queens.

By Car

Street parking is available on 6th Street as well as on nearby side streets. Gowanus’s industrial character means parking is generally easier here than in neighboring Park Slope or Carroll Gardens — though we recommend giving yourself a few extra minutes on event nights.

By Bike

The closest Citi Bike dock is at 3rd Avenue and 7th Street, one block away. The neighborhood is well-connected for cyclists: there’s a dedicated bike path along 4th Avenue, a bike lane on 3rd Avenue, and bike lanes across the Gowanus Canal bridges at Union Street, 3rd Street, and 9th Street.

Accessibility Info

Physical Access

  • Entrance: To enter the building, there is a single step, and we have a temporary ramp that we can set up over that single step. There are also three additional steps immediately inside the front door, to get up to the elevator, and unfortunately the ramp is not really appropriate for those steps, as the incline would be very steep. This remains a real challenge for anyone who cannot manage steps. We are eager to offer any support we can and to hear from people with accessibility needs about what you would need to get over those three steps. We welcome creative solutions!
  • Elevator: There is a freight elevator that we can operate for anyone who needs it. Because operating it requires some familiarity and physical capacity, an event host or trained volunteer will come down to bring you up — and will be available to bring you back down when you leave. Please let us know when you register that you’d like elevator access so we can make sure someone is available, and flag it again when you arrive.
  • Bathrooms: All-gender bathrooms are on the same floor as the studio, with step-free travel between the two. There is a small lip at the bathroom entrance — no steps, but not fully flush — and we’re currently exploring ways to smooth that transition. Bathroom doorways are narrow and not ADA compliant — approximately 30 inches. One stall is significantly larger than the others, though it does not meet full accessibility standards.
  • Scooter & Bicycle Storage: There is an indoor storage area in the lobby where you’re welcome to leave a mobility scooter, bicycle, or similar. Please secure it and note that storage is at your own risk.
